Jollification Show Notes: Side A

Mat and I waffled on for 3-5 working days about Jollification for our latest episode of the Lightning Seeds podcast. As such, the Jollification podcast will be split into 2 episodes. Side A, which will deal with the first half of the album, and Side B which will deal with the second half of the album.

Before we go any further, if you haven’t already, you really ought to buy Ian’s autobiography Tomorrow’s Here Today. Get it here from Rough Trade. Alternatively, listen to the Audiobook here on Audible or here on Spotify.

Back in the day, pre-internet (ask your Mum / Dad), if you wanted information on your favourite band, you had to put your details on one of these postcards (as photographed below) and pop it in the postbox.

Before a new release came out, you’d be sent a postcard with the forthcoming release’s artwork and the details of the release date and track listings. For good measure, you’d get details of the related album and some tour dates, too. Here’s one for the re-release of Lucky You.

In this episode of the podcast, we mention the acoustic version of Perfect. Here it is:

As we already know, Lucky You was co-written with with Terry Hall. But there’s only three co-writes on this album, the rest is all Ian. And Lucky You is the only Terry Hall co-write. Here’s Ian, Terry and Craig Gannon (he features on the entire solo Terry Hall album Home) performing acoustic versions of Sense and Lucky You

In the podcast, I mention the song Look-Ka Py Py by the Meters. A small section of this song is sampled in Open Goals. Here it is on YouTube:

As mentioned in the podcast, the Lightning Seeds made their first actual appearance on Top Of The Pops with the song Change. Get ready for big jumpers, dodgy goatees and Chris *almost* playing along to the song.

Mat mentions a little bit about the lyrical content of Change, and of an acoustic version with Angie Pollock, and Ian talking about the lyrics. Here it is:

Why Why Why features the vocal talents of one of Ian’s friends, house / dance star Marina Van Rooy. Here’s Sly One, one of her bangin’ choons, innit:

We mentioned the very talented Adele Emmas, who currently handles the keys and backing vocals in the band. She also nailed the vocals on the live version of Why Why Why, which can be heard in this video.

Adele has an EP out now. It’s bloody superb, so get over to Spotify and give it a listen:

Great, now you’ve finished reading the show notes and listened to Side A of the podcast. Whilst you’re waiting for Side B, make a cup of tea, pop on Jollification on your medium of choice and replay Tim’s Twitter Listening Party here.
